Romania has many spectacular waterfalls, thanks to which it has acquired a solid reputation internationally. What could be more relaxing than being in the heart of nature, watching and listening to the murmur of the water? The following waterfalls are true masterpieces of nature, and your vacation in Romania must include at least a visit to one of them:
1. Bigar waterfall
The waterfall in Caraş-Severin has been designated many times as the most beautiful in the world. For example, the publication “The World Geography” ranked it first in an international top. The waterfall is located in Bozovici and is part of the Cheile Nerei-Beușnița National Park. Its uniqueness lies in the way its water flows, as well as in the fact that it is located on the line of Parallel 45. The waterfall is like a mushroom of huge proportions, adorned with moss and bathed by water of a mesmerizing blue.
2. Beușnița waterfall
Also located in Cheile Nerei-Beușnița National Park, this waterfall reveals its splendor in spring when it’s best to visit. After the snow melts, and the spring rains lavishly flow, the Beușnița waterfall presents itself to the visitors in its most spectacular form. In winter also it offers a magnificent view, when it freezes and gets the appearance of an “ice colossus”. Its height reaches 30 m and is one of the natural emblems of southern Banat.
3. Horses’waterfall
Located close to Borșa resort, Horses’ waterfall can be reached either by chairlift or on foot. If you choose the first option, you will have about 15 minutes to walk before you have in front of your eyes one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Romania. The stretch of water is formed by the rains and the melting of the snow that forms a glacial circle that flows over a calcareous slope. This is how the largest waterfall in Romania takes shape.
4. Vălul Miresei or Bride’s veil waterfall
Known also as the “Răchiţele” waterfall, it spreads near the homonymous locality on the territory of Cluj county. It is called the “Bride’s Veil” because the steps from which it is formed are scattered in the form of a veil. The waterfall is 68 km from Cluj-Napoca, so if you reach the area, you should not miss it. It is one of the most precious treasures of the Apuseni Mountains.
5. Ciucaș waterfall
Next, we turn our attention to another natural splendor of Transylvania. Ciucaș Waterfall is located 45 km away from Cluj-Napoca, in the Hasdat Gorge, on the homonymous valley. The waterfall is 5 m high, and at its bottom sprawls a lake where you can enjoy a relaxing moment. If you sit with your back to the waterfalls, you can even indulge into the benefits of a hydromassage.
6. Urlătoarea or the screaming waterfall
The waterfall is located in Busteni, at the Jepilor feet in the Bucegi National Park. Its name comes from the wild rustling of the strong flow of the two streams. The waterfall is located at 1100 m altitude and there are two routes through which you can reach it. An option is to walk half an hour after a nice sight from the cable car in Busteni. The other option is to leave behind Poiana Țapului, enjoying another hour of walk. The mountain vegetation and the picturesque landscape create a perfect destination for relaxation.
7. Bâlea waterfall
It is the largest stepped waterfall on the Romanian territory, located in the Făgăraș mountains. Specifically, the stretch of water is sheltered between the mountain peaks Moldoveanu and Negoiu, at an impressive altitude of 1200 m. To visit the waterfall you have to cross Transfăgărășan road, and after reaching the Bâlea chalet, you still have about 50 minutes to walk till you reach the waterfall and stay content in its beauty.
8. Caraiman waterfall
This waterfall is located in Prahova Valley, near Busteni. It is also known as the “Ghost Waterfall” because water falls only in spring when the snow is melting and heavy rains are generously dropping. It is located on the opposite side of the Jepilor Valley, at 1700 m altitude. To get to the waterfall you will have to go by the cable car which is the link between Busteni and Bucegi plateau. This natural masterpiece is an oasis of purity that completes the beauty of the Caraiman Peak.
9. Duruitoarea waterfall
Now we are heading towards Ceahlău commune in Neamț county to discover a waterfall declared a protected area of national interest. It is located in the Rupturii Creek Valley in the Ceahlău Massif, at 1247 m altitude. To reach the waterfall, you have to start your journey in Durău Resort and then choose your trekking route from the three marked paths. The hike is of medium difficulty, lasts about two hours, and in some places, there are benches where you can take breaks not because you feel the need but to enjoy the landscape. The effort is worth it, because you will reach a meadow surrounded by majestic trees, in the middle of which spreads the foamy waterfall.
10. Toplița Mesothermal Waterfall
This is the only thermal waterfall in the country. It is declared a protected area of national interest, and its water contains large amounts of calcium. Its special character lies in the fact that the water almost never freezes. However, it sometimes happens as the winters in Toplița are very harsh and temperatures can drop to -29 degrees Celsius.
