Top 10 places you can’t miss in Cluj-Napoca

  • The Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden of Cluj Napoca is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. With more than 10,000 plant species collected from all corners of the planet, its 6 areas become the perfect place for those seeking a relaxing spot for meditation and introspection.
Here you will also find the largest herbarium in Romania and a spectacular botanical museum. Among all the exhibits, one of the most notable attractions is the Japanese Garden, which includes a small island surrounded by an artificial lake where several species of fish swim. If you want to visit the Botanical Garden, remember the address: Republicii Street 42.

  • Cetățuia (The Fortress)

This is a tourist spot that should not be left off the list. The fortress is a reference to a fortification with the same name that dates back to 1735. Initially, its role was (indeed) that of a fortress, but it later became a prison and is now one of the most appreciated places in Cluj for the panoramic views it offers.

  • Bastionul Croitorilor (The Tailors’ Bastion)

This monument owes its name to the most important guild in the city: the Tailors. They were responsible for maintaining the tower in times of peace and defending it in times of war. It was built in 1405, during the time of Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg, the true architect of its construction.

  • The Central Park

Its more than 180 years of history have made the Central Park “Simion Bărnuțiu,” also known as “the Great Park”, one of the most emblematic spots in Cluj. Once inside, there are several points of interest; for example, in the summer, you can take a boat ride on the small central lake to cool off, or even use a pedal boat.
You can also visit the Chios restaurant and the Casino. The first, in a neoclassical style, was built under Roman and Greek inspiration. It has a varied menu that includes typical local cuisine.

The old Casino, for its part, is also one of the symbolic places. A significant variety of artistic and cultural events are held here, skillfully combining the innovative and the contemporary.

  • The “Elisabeta” Bridge

The “Elisabeta” bridge is a symbol for romantics. It dates back to 1901, and if it could talk, it would tell the hundreds of love stories it witnesses every day. It’s Cluj’s own small Pont des Arts, as emblematic as its Parisian counterpart and a place where many love stories and confessions are shared. Naturally, it’s crowned on both sides with locks of all shapes, sizes, and colors, each with their own love messages.

  • Piața Unirii (Union Square)

It is one of the oldest squares in the city and a true historical and cultural landmark for Cluj. Union Square is perfect for a leisurely stroll, but also to discover some significant historical elements such as the statue of Matei Corvin, Banffy Palace, Hotel Melody, Rhedey Palace, Josika Palace, or Wass Palace.

  • Piața Muzeului (Museum Square)

This is another popular spot in the heart of Transylvania, especially in the summer. Its streets are filled with terraces and places for a memorable experience. Just by stepping onto its cobblestone alley, you’ll feel the energy that overflows in this core of the city. In medieval times, its name was Piata Mică (the Small Square).

  • Biserica Sfântul Mihail (St. Michael’s Church)

Did you know that St. Michael’s Church is the second-largest Gothic building in Transylvania by size? To make sure you don’t miss anything, the first is the Black Church in Brasov.
This imposing building, located in Union Square, is one of the most valuable in the city. The church tower (considering the cross at its top) is the tallest of its kind in all of Romania, standing at 80 meters.

  • The Franciscan Church

Located in Museum Square, it is one of the oldest buildings of its kind. Initially, this was the site of the first Roman Catholic church in Cluj-Napoca. After being devastated in the Tatar invasions, the church that you can visit today was built. Additionally, in front of it, you will see the Carolina Obelisk, another imposing monument.

  • Potaissa Street

Its picturesque scene (in the best sense) will take you back to medieval times. The old city walls still stand here, and if you’re lucky, your visit might coincide with a typical Transylvanian local market. But don’t worry if it’s not your lucky day; this area always has plenty of dining options in the form of bars and restaurants.

You’ve now discovered what could easily be our essential top list for Cluj Napoca! But we also encourage you to get lost in the city and find other corners to create your own top list. Enjoy your visit!
