How to Spend One Day in Brașov

Once you’ve established that you want to visit Romania, you should know that one of the must-see locations is the city of Brașov. Wandering through the history-filled streets of this medieval town found in the heart of Transylvania is an experience you cannot miss. This is what a day in Brașov could look like:

The best starting point for the medieval tour you are going to embark on is in the historic city centre namely, the Council Square. You will have the opportunity to see many historical buildings whose uniquely decorated colorful facades will most surely catch your eye. Here’s a little sneak peek of the architectural gems you are going to see: the Council House (1420), the Merchants’ House, the Romanian Orthodox Church of Assumption, the Mureșeni’s House, and the Filstich-Plecker House. These buildings are categorised as historical monuments but the list is far from complete.

The Council Square

Not far from the Council Square, you’ll find the Black Church, considered one of the most representative baroque architectural monuments in the country. The church was erected through the XIV-XV centuries, a period in which it was referred to as “the biggest church between Vienna and Constantinople”.

Next, our attention is drawn towards two towers which, in the old times, were acting as defense points within the stronghold of Brasov: the White Tower and the Black Tower. Today, however, from here, one can only enjoy the view over the city and imagine how sagacious the person in charge of pursuing alleged attackers must have been. Indeed, around the 1400s, this was the watching spot against any assailants who dared to aspire to conquer the citadel. Both towers, which are situated on Straja Hill, now host various exhibitions and special events.

Șchei Gate was built around 1828, it has three entrances and the shape of an Arch of Triumph. It sits next to Catherine’s Gate, one of the few medieval buildings that has been preserved in an exemplary manner. In this area one can also visit the Neolog Synagogue and the Groaveri Church.

Built between 1421-1436, the Weavers Bastion is another emblematic historical establishment. This building acts as proof to the skill of the craftsmen who at that time were part of the linen weavers’ guild. Today, the Bastion is home to a museum that allows visitors to familiarise themselves with the old Brașov citadel and the fortifications around it.

Another attraction point which cannot be missed in the one-day tour of Brașov is Strada Sforii (Rope Street), the third narrowest street in Europe. Its tale began with its use as a corridor to help firemen. Today, only the stories remain as its destination is no longer the same. However, it is a place that acquired international praise surprising its visitors with the endless possibilities of capturing the perfect picture.

Tâmpa Mountain is our final proposal from the one-day touristic circuit of Braşov.

This place is, in essence, a symbol for the people of Braşov and is located right in the heart of the city. The mountain is part of the Postăvaru Massif and is a splendid nature reserve. To climb up the Tâmpa you have two choices: either walk up as the route is not too complex or use the cable. This area is home to a unique floral diversity and the landscapes along the way are so breathtaking making it impossible to find the right words to describe them.
