A few tens of minutes drive away from Timisoara there are special places that deserve to be visited if you find yourself in the area. This region is, by definition, beautiful and varied in terms of tourism, which is why we suggest you don’t limit yourself to only visiting the city. Whether you are looking for picturesque places, adventure or pampering, we have a few suggestions for you:
Muzeul Satului Bănățean (Banat Village Museum)
The museum is located at 31 Avram Imbroane Street, in the Green Forest, at the exit from the city. It is an open-air ethnographic museum through which visitors get to know the authentic life of Banat. The ensemble is structured like a village, making this concept truly original. Here you will see households, streets, mills, a church, a school, a town hall, and a national house. In the same place, you’ll also find the Ethnography Section of the Village Museum which contains over 10,000 heritage objects: fabrics, icons, wooden and ceramic objects. Altringen
It is a village 46 km away from Timișoara and is crossed by the county road 691A. What we call Altringen today was once known as “Recășel” and was an almost entirely Swabian village. Traditions and local food are characterised by multiculturalism, as Altringen has been, over time, the cradle of several ethnic groups: Serbs, Hungarians, Romanians. Currently, it is the place of escape from the daily routine of the people of Timisoara and beyond.
On the territory of the Banat village there is the Altringen House, which you cannot miss. Next to the house there is the forest which is the perfect place for clearing your thoughts and becoming one with nature. The guest house is decorated in a traditional Swabian style, and the menu changes regularly and contains both traditional and international dishes. Visit Altringen if you want to escape the urban life and immerse yourself in the beauties of nature. In the vicinity of the guest house, 7 km away, there is the Monastery and Basilica Maria Radna.
Șoimoș Citadel/ Fortress
Less than an hour’s drive away from Timișoara, near the aforementioned village, is the Șoimoș Fortress. It is located 220 m high, on top of Cioaca Tăutului hill. It was first officially mentioned in 1278, and is now part of the list of historic buildings. The view you have once you get here is splendid and offers a wide perspective on the Arad Plain and on the Mureș gorge. It is no coincidence that this fortress is considered one of the most beautiful medieval fortifications in the country.
Satchinez Swamps
This area is called the “Banat Delta”, because of the diversified ecosystem that can be found here a true ornithological nature reserve. Protected species such as: little egret, long-legged egret, great egret, night heron live here. In addition, along with birds, various animals coexist, such as: deer, fox, rabbit.
The Satchinez swamps are 28 km away from Timișoara and you’ll have no problems on the commune’s roads. But once you get to Satchinez, you’ll drive a little longer, after which you’ll have to walk for two hours. The road was not paved on the grounds that this would disturb the habitats.
