Deva is the city in Transylvania whose history lasts through its great fortress. The historic centre and ancient buildings sit in harmony with urban, contemporary elements such as terraces and parks where you can relax. At the same time, it is a city of reference for Romania, as it is the place where the champions of the national gymnastics team train.
The first official attestation of the locality dates from 1265, under the name of “Hungnod”. Deva Fortress was the most important medieval fortification in Transylvania, given its geographical position. This was the residence of the Transylvanian voivodes. Subsequently, the fortress goes into state ownership. The city developed at the foot of the fortress, being the capital of Hunedoara shire, and, later, of the county.
Deva is the residence of the Hunedoara county and is located in the central-western part of the country. The municipality is located on the Mureș valley, at the foot of the Poiana Ruscă mountains. The neighbours of the region are: to the north-east and east, Alba county, to the east and south-east, Vâlcea county, to the south Gorj county, to the west Timiș and Caraș-Severin and to the west and north-west, Arad county.
Built in the 13th century on Citadel Hill in Deva, atop a 250-meter-high rock, from where you can enjoy a complete view of the city. It played an important strategic role, guarding the entrance to the region. It was rebuilt by King Béla IV after the Tatar invasion and served as the residence of the voivodes of Transylvania. The fortress underwent renovations and reinforcements over the centuries but was occupied several times by the Turks and witnessed battles during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–1849.
Today, the fortress is a major tourist attraction, consisting of three enclosures with different shapes, occupying the top and part of the northern side of the height. Access is possible via cable car/car/on foot.
