History &

Geography

The first documentary attestation of the city dates from 1212. Timișoara was built on the site of an old Roman fortress called “Castrum Regium Themes”. Over time, Timisoara was ruled by the Hungarians, Ottomans and Habsburgs. Thus, the city was strongly influenced by many cultures. The year 1919 sees the union of Banat with Romania, at which moment the Romanian administration is installed for the first time in Timișoara. The city later went through the communist period. The revolution of 1989 started from Timișoara and represented the end of the Soviet era.

 

Timișoara is the municipality of Timiș County, being located in the western extremity of Romania, near the borders with Hungary and Serbia. Its neighbors are: to the north – Arad county, to the east – Hunedoara, to the south – Caraș-Severin. The city is located in the southeast of the Tisza plain, in the digression area of the Bega and Timiș rivers.

Maria Theresa Bastion – is the most representative part left of the old Citadel of Timișoara.

Rozelor Park

 Rozelor Park – one of the symbols of the city,  because of which Timișoara is also called “the city of Roses”. The people of Timișoara even have a day dedicated to roses, which takes place on the last Thursday of May, every year.

One of the city’s symbols, which contributes to Timișoara being known as the “City of Roses,” is an oasis of greenery and beauty, renowned for its impressive collection of roses and other flowers. With its winding pathways and well-maintained gardens, this park is the ideal place for leisurely strolls and moments of contemplation. Its tranquil atmosphere and the enticing scent of flowers make it a favorite relaxation spot for both locals and visitors alike.

Timișoreans even have a day dedicated to roses, which takes place on the last Thursday of May each year.

Transport to/from Timișoara

Timisoara has an airport located 12 km from the city centre. The “Traian Vuia” International Airport has connections to most European countries, including Spain. There are also domestic flights to / from Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași. The airlines that fly to Timișoara airport are: Tarom, Blue Air, Lufthansa, Air France, Alitalia, Ryanair, Eurowings and Wizzair.

 

If you land in Bucharest and want to go to Timisoara by car, the recommended routes are: Bucharest – Pitești – Râmnicu Vâlcea – Târgu Jiu – Hațeg – Caransebeș – Lugoj – Buziaș – Timișoara or Bucharest – Pitești – Râmnicu Vâlcea – Sibiu – Dev Buziaș – Timișoara.

 

You can also choose to travel by train. The most important railway junction in western Romania is found here. We are talking about the CFR network, as well as the Regio Călători and Astra Transcarpatic network. They offer several internal routes.

 

If you prefer bus / bus travel, be aware that there are several bus stations around the North Station and on Calea Stan Vidigrin from where you can choose various companies that serve regional / national transport.

Festivals and other attractions in Timișoara

If you like music festivals, in Constanta you will find one to your taste, regardless of the style of music you prefer. Here you have a list with some of them, but you should know that every weekend there are events for all tastes.

  • PLAI Festival – is a music festival organised in a unique setting: the Banat Village Museum, between 13-15 September.
  • Jazz Festival TM – is a jazz festival co-financed from public funds, which has become a symbol of the city, which takes place between 10-12 November.
  • Revolution Festival – is an eclectic music festival, which brings together famous artists from various musical genres such as: house, electronica, drum and bass, rock. The festival takes place between 8-10 August, at the Forestry High School.
  • The celebrations at Hanul Timișoreana – a festival that lasts 8 days that aims to celebrate the local beer “Timișoreana” – through live music, food and good cheer.
